This was taken on Feb. 3, 2010, a rare weekday paddle at Newport Harbor. The video and paddle have a mellow, almost melancholy feel, but also a happy one. I was feeling all of these things that day. I hope you enjoy it. |

Downpour From Waterspout

I went for a solo paddle out of Newport on 3/6/10. It was breezy and choppy but seemed pretty nice. Then when I was off Corona Del Mar, I saw a waterspout in the distance. Water was being whipped up in a cone below a funnel cloud. It was right of the edge of a squall (more rain than wind) coming right at me. Of course, what do I do? Pull out the video camera! The rest of the paddle was choppy and breezy but nice. The waterspout was rather weak and too far away for video, but I got some good footage of the downpour |

Steam Bending Wood for Skinboat

Steam bending wood for a skin-on-frame kayak with Duane Strosaker, and his assistant, Ken Fry. Flat grain red oak with minimal grain run-out was chosen from Lowes, and only $45 was spent on it, which turned out to be enough to bend for two kayaks. Only one rib had to be replace, and a second was replaced to make it perfect. |
